Ad-pocalypse now - this ruling is significant. It’s just the latest sign that doing targeted advertising using people’s personal data is going to become much harder for tech companies in Europe. Even aside from this decision, Europe’s Digital Markets Act, which is now in force, prohibits the use of “personal data collected during a service for the purposes of another service without prior consent,”
That implies that Meta, like every other digital-based advertiser that uses data and operates in Europe, will have to be more transparent about seeking consent—probably by asking people to explicitly agree to the use of their data in the sale of advertising. Meta, for its part, says it will appeal and insists the ruling doesn’t prevent personalized advertising on its platform. That’s an optimistic reading of the decision. It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that targeting advertising as we know it is doomed.
