Who's the best tech CEO?  

I watched the recent bing announcement and several interviews. I am more and more impressed by the vision of Satya Nadella. Microsoft pivoted to cloud and prepared for AI under his leadership.

I’ve also been a big fan of Jensen Huang. He turned nvidia from a gaming hardware company into something so much bigger. AI, self-driving, and data center. He is always at the cutting edge.

I would rank Satya and Jensen top 2 CEOs. Of course, everyone could probably agree Tim Cook and Lisa Su are doing a fantastic job too. The stock performance of all four companies reflect the great jobs of their CEOs.

I’m not so sure about Sundar Pichai. He looked unprepared facing the threat of ChatGPT. I know Andy Jassy did a great job at AWS but he is unproven as a CEO.

Asian American women are the least likely to be promoted of any demographic, but the 2024 TIME CEO of the Year is a Taiwanese American woman named Lisa Su.

Most East Asian CEOs have not been promoted to their positions, they have had to start their own companies in order to get that position. AMD CEO Lisa Su worked her way to the top despite all of the stereotypes and obstacles. She defied the odds and is proof that Asian American women are perfectly capable of leading. 

“Asian Americans are least likely to be promoted to senior management and leadership: In 2016, Ascend found that one of every 12 white men and one of every 28 white women in the professional workforce is an executive, but only one of every 30 Asian American men and one of every 64 Asian American women have reached executive level.

East Asian women report lower engagement and career satisfaction. They are 66% less likely than white women to see a long-term future in tech, 42% more likely to have felt demeaned, disrespected, left out of the loop, or treated as invisible, 47% more likely than white women to have their competence and commitment put into question when becoming mothers, and 38% more likely to have difficulty getting administrative support.

South Asian women were 60% less likely than white women to see a long-term future in tech, 54% more likely to be given work beneath their skillset, and 54% more likely to feel that distancing from those like them was a politically savvy move at work. Whereas Southeast Asian women were 29% more likely than white women to leave a job for the workplace culture, 57% more likely to feel called on to perform emotional labor, 51% more likely to feel corralled into traditionally feminine roles, 45% more likely to feel perceived as a team player not a leader, and 43% more likely to feel expected to be a worker bee.”

Jeff Bezos is the only person to ever take a company from inception to a $2 Trillion valuation. In terms of creating value, I don't think it gets much better than that.

While DOCU was in free-fall after an earnings report of slower growth/ obvious unprofitability in December of 2021, he bought a ton of shares as a vote of confidence that his company was undervalued. Surprise surprise, he got slaughtered on that. The guy got ousted (now suing the company for the board conspiring against him too early). To me, it was one of the very few "moments" that I look back on and say that was a catalyst to the start of the burst of the tech bubble.

Tim Cook is definitely underrated, he is doing a fantastic job keeping apple dominant.  probably the GOAT for non-founder CEOs. Apple was not nearly as dominant back when he took over and Steve Jobs passed away. Even before then, Cook had already been critical to developing Apple’s supply chain and operations for massive scale under Jobs previously (as COO). Now Apple is the largest company on earth with a few exceptions (Saudi Aramco and similar).

What about Tim Apple Cook? has to be mentioned here..

Satya Nadella did one heck of a turn around but Elon Musk has to be # 1 considering the difficulty of turning a startup in the middle of the financial crisis into a behemoth and have turned the tables on legacy auto companies..

AMD was on brink of bankruptcy in 2014-15 and stock was at $2/share. Someone made a decision to put Su in charge and she has turned around.

Now she is on WhiteHouse Seniconductor Board, Board of Dir for Multiple companies, Not to mention she has received over14+ awards, I think MIT campus has a new hall with her name.

She single handedly turned around a sinkijg ship with only 10-15K employees (Now probably more employees).

Satya Nadella is fine but he hasn't turned around, MS's cloud strategy was not defined by Satya Nadella, Azure has been there from before him. MS's cloud startegy started with Office 365 which came smtime in 2017 timeframe.
