Google gets its data from lots of sources, and some sources are different in different countries.

- It buys data (and updates to that data) from sources such as national mapping agencies
- It collects free data from public domain sources
- It collects GPS data from over a billion Android smartphones (all Android phones come with “Location Services” switched on, and while it’s on, all location data is sent to Google to use however they wish)
- It owns Waze, an app for sharing traffic data
- It buys traffic data from other companies and governmental bodies that collect traffic data
- Its own Street View cars, as well as taking photos, record GPS data as they drive around
- It derives the locations of roads from satellite photography, originally using humans to trace over visible roads, and now also using AI to do this

Summary: it buys data, generates its own data, and tracks Android phones - and since three-quarters of all smartphones run Android, Google has a richer dataset to work with than anyone else.
