A Phoenix area chip plant run by the world’s top manufacturer, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., is producing usable chips at a better rate than comparable facilities in the company’s home country of Taiwan, an executive said Thursday in a webinar, according to a Bloomberg report.

The comments from Rick Cassidy, head of TSMC’s American unit division, is good news for U.S. efforts to incentivize companies to make more vital hardware domestically, especially as the threat of a China takeover of Taiwan looms. Nvidia, Tesla, Apple, Google and other technology giants rely on TSMC to make their best chips.

The report, which cited a person who listened to the webinar, did not specify what type of chipmaking technology was producing the solid yields. And TSMC hasn’t yet set up any facilities outside of Taiwan for assembling its most advanced chips, including for artificial intelligence, after they are produced. That means chips produced in the U.S. still have to be sent to Taiwan for assembly, also known as packaging. However, the company said earlier this month it would developing a packaging plant on U.S. soil with Amkor, an American firm.
