Recommend everyone take a look at Airbnb’s product launch yesterday. I am placing a small bet and looking to buy more on dips based on what I see as big value unlocked with this release.
2 products I love:
1) they enabled flexible search by home category (think: “I want to stay in a Castle somewhere in Ireland”, “I want to stay somewhere in the desert”).
I find search based on a desired vibe instead of destination extremely appealing as a user. I also think it unlocks a ton of value for both sides of their network by making “hidden gem” bnbs in unknown locations more discoverable. This should allow for more transactions overall on the platform.
Another very cool update: they took a step into enabling curated travel with “split stays”. I think the potential here to strengthen the supply side of their ecosystem is huge. They are starting small, allowing 2 hosts to link together their stays. It think this becomes like a curated Shopify playlist for travel, built collaboratively by multiple hosts. It has the potential to provide a plug and play “tour” type experience for guests, while maintaining the “off the beaten path” vibe or Airbnb
