Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the largest chip manufacturer in the world, said on Thursday that it had not observed any changes in customer behavior with regards to new U.S. tariffs. The company maintains a revenue growth target of mid-20% for this year.

“We might get a better picture in the next few months,” chief executive C.C. Wei said on an earrings call.

TSMC’s revenue soared 42% to $25.5 billion in the first quarter from a year ago, thanks to strong demand for artificial intelligence silicon. Net profit rose 60% to $11 billion during the same period.

The company said the planned $100 billion investments in chipmaking facilities in Arizona will dilute its overall gross profit margin by up to 4% in the future, due to higher cost of labor and the cost to build the factories. Eventually the Arizona plants will be responsible for 30% of the company’s currently most advanced 2-nanometer chip production capacity, Wei added.

The company declined to comment on impact of the U.S. government’s recent ban on the sale of more of Nvidia’s AI chips to China.

it’s a telling sign of how topsy-turvy things have become under the second Trump administration that executives from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s biggest chipmaker and a vital piece of Taiwan’s economy, held a press conference on Thursday in Taipei to defend the company—against Taiwanese critics of its $100 billion planned investment in the U.S. 

In what was a real coup for President Donald Trump, TSMC on Monday outlined plans to build several new facilities, including three new chip-fabrication plants, in the U.S. The investment would be a big step toward elevating U.S. chip manufacturing prowess—which appears to be why some in Taiwan don’t like it. 

According to our Asia editor, Jing Yang, the announcement angered many in Taiwan, who worry that if TSMC shifts too much advanced manufacturing capacity to the U.S., that will leave Taiwan more exposed to a Chinese invasion. Under this line of thinking, the U.S. would have less reason to help protect Taiwan. Even members of Taiwan’s opposition party, the KMT, raised the issue.

Leaving aside the knotty question of how the U.S. would respond to a Chinese invasion, building advanced plants in the U.S. doesn’t necessarily mean shutting any down in Taiwan. At Thursday’s press conference, TSMC CEO C.C. Wei made the point that the investment was a response to increasing customer demand for AI chips. TSMC’s manufacturing capacity was fully booked this year and next, he said, so adding plants makes sense. To clarify that point, Taiwan’s government announced on Tuesday that it would ensure TSMC’s most advanced processes stay in Taiwan.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world’s largest chipmaker, reported on Thursday that net income increased 57% to $11.6 billion in the December quarter from a year ago, thanks to strong demand for artificial intelligence chips.

TSMC, which manufactures chips for Nvidia and Apple, projected that revenue from AI chips will double in 2025. AI chips account for 53% of the company’s revenue in the fourth quarter, with the rest from smartphone, automotive and other chips. Total revenue increased 39% to $26.8 billion in the fourth quarter.

The U.S. government on Wednesday proposed new export control regulations that prevent Chinese companies from placing advanced AI chip orders at TSMC. CEO C.C. Wei said impact from the new rules would be “manageable,” as the company can still work with Chinese companies on non-AI chips.

TSMC generated 11% of revenue from China in 2024, compared to 20% in 2019.
