SMIC is now the world’s third-largest integrated-circuit foundry by sales.
The Shanghai-based company has been under US trade sanctions since 2020, and it has been mainly engaged in making older-generation chips using mature chip-manufacturing processes.
China’s capacity to make these so-called legacy chips, used in consumer products from cars to personal computers, has been growing under a US embargo on shipments of advanced technologies to the country.
Chinese production of these chips has soared thanks partly to brisk demand by sectors like electric vehicles and smartphones. Xiaomi, the world’s best-selling Chinese smartphone brand, beat quarterly revenue estimates this week, after its global shipments grew by a third.
The mainland’s global share of mature process capacity is expected to expand to 39 per cent in 2027 from 31 per cent last year
