YouTube, the goliath of online video, has become Netflix’s biggest rival for viewers. Until recently, they stayed out of each other’s way in how they made money—but that’s increasingly changing. Netflix is the largest video-streaming subscription service trying to become a player in advertising, and YouTube is the biggest video ad outlet trying to build a subscription business. 

On Wednesday, YouTube unveiled its latest subscription play, a $7.99 a month ad-free option, which will omit commercials on everything except for music videos. This offer complements its existing $13.99 Premium option, which also has ad-free music videos and other bells and whistles. In the same announcement, YouTube claimed to have “125 million subscribers” globally for YouTube Premium and YouTube Music, another subscription offering. That’s small compared with Netflix’s 300 million subscribers, but it’s not bad for a company best known as a free streaming video service. 

One has to take the subscriber number with a grain of salt, however. YouTube’s parent company, Google, implied last October that YouTube’s subscription revenue—including its YouTube TV cable-like service—was then running at a $15 billion annual rate. That seems low given the cost of the various services. A good portion of the 125 million Premium and Music subscribers may be on free trials.

 The bigger issue is whether the subscription push makes sense. Sure, most media companies (as well as food-delivery and e-commerce firms) want to be in both subscriptions and advertising. But the pivot may be a zero-sum game for YouTube. Every person who signs up for an ad-free subscription at YouTube is by definition no longer available to see ads. If too many people sign up for these offerings, YouTube’s thriving ad business will suffer. That’s an issue Spotify has grappled with, as we reported in this story earlier this month. Spotify’s best customers sign up for its subscription service, which deprives the company of the revenue from advertisers who want to reach them. 

YouTube undoubtedly knows this. the thinking internally at YouTube is that it has too many videos for the finite number of ad dollars available. If it can pick up any incremental dollars from subscriptions, it will take them. The real question is whether many people will sign up.

I have a bunch of streaming services, but no time to watch anything.  How do these small streamers get customers to sign up for ANOTHER subscription?

If only there were one service where you could find a bunch of different channels and services all in one place. Oh, wait—there is: cable 🫠😝

Netflix's ad-tier memberships jumped 35%. The company is on track to launch the service in Canada in the coming quarter and more broadly in 2025.

As far as stock performance goes, Netflix is basically the only streaming stock worth buying.   

Rival streaming services are either units of companies suffering through a costly transition from cable TV (Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount Global) or small cogs in conglomerates focused on other things (Apple, Amazon).

That does NOT mean it's not overvalued at its current ATH.
