Disney+ has quietly become one of the most expensive streaming services

Greed killed cable TV, as TV executives couldn’t help themselves from jacking up prices to unsustainable levels, triggering the cord cutting that has rendered cable a shadow of its former self. 

The same thing is happening in streaming, which became popular a few years ago as a low-cost alternative to cable. We got word on Tuesday that Disney is—again—raising prices for its streaming service bundles, effective Oct. 21. The Disney+ and Hulu bundle with ads will go up $2 a month to $12.99, for instance. 

These price rises have been an annual event for Disney since 2021, occurring every October since 2023. Disney is far from alone. Netflix has been raising prices regularly. 

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, meanwhile, earlier this month told investors that people were spending “twice as much 10 years ago for content” as they are now. As a result he saw a “real opportunity” to raise prices for its HBO Max service.

A package of Disney+, Hulu, Netflix and HBO Max, without ads, would now cost about $66 a month. Add on a few smaller packages, and you’re in cable TV land in terms of cost. This won’t end well!
