Broadcom has joined TSMC in considering possible deals to buy part of Intel, the Wall Street Journal reported, the latest sign of the U.S. chipmaking icon’s steady decline.
Last week officials within the Trump administration asked TSMC, which makes most of the world’s most advanced chips on behalf of designers such as Nvidia, to consider buying a controlling stake in Intel’s chipmaking factories. Broadcom, according to the Journal, has been examining Intel’s chip design and marketing business. Broadcom makes custom AI chips on behalf of companies such as Google and has reportedly been working with companies such as Apple.
The Journal report says none of the discussions have advanced beyond the preliminary and informal stage. Broadcom and TSMC are not working together, the report said.

Shares of Broadcom, another chipmaker, are rising as those of Nvidia fall. Broadcom was up 11% on Monday, to $250, which means it has gained 46% in the past week and now has a market capitalization of $1.16 trillion. 

Broadcom stock is now trading at 20 times forward sales, according to Koyfin data, a higher valuation than Nvidia’s 18 times forward sales. Investors seem to believe the messaging from Broadcom last Thursday—that it has a big opportunity in the artificial intelligence chips it is helping big tech companies like Google and Meta Platforms make.

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said Thursday the company’s AI chip and networking business could generate $60 billion to $90 billion in revenue in the fiscal year that ends in November 2027. That means Broadcom leaders believe revenue from that part of its business will rise at least five times from the $12.2 billion it generated in the fiscal year that ended Nov. 3 of this year.

Mr. Altman was likely trolling for money from the UAE, SoftBank, and others but I don't think there is a need for a new "AI" chip, even for consumer devices.

First, I'll define an AI-themed processor as one which implements massively parallel vector processing in order to do the machine learning algorithms necessary for training and/or inference as needed to train and use a neural network.

Many companies including those who have announced products recently are already busy with new AI processor designs. In the case of one that I'm familiar with because I worked for its precursor before they did an AI-themed processor, the chip design is complete and partnerships have been announced to start to build them in the coming years.

What is actually of interest is the enabling technologies, which include but are not limited to new chiplet technology for scaling, new methods for building the interconnect between chips or chiplets, and power technologies, whether for running a data center (renewables, etc.), an appliance, car, or personal device.

Also of note is a non-profit that recently established a mechanism for companies with AI (machine learning) processors or systems to compare the performance, power usage, and other metrics of their products.

With all of the above, it appears the bottleneck will be who can get their processors manufactured with the best possible fabrication equipment, which has been in the news recently involving several companies in Silicon Valley and worldwide that produce the enabling technologies.
